GIANTS WIN THE WORLD SERIES

The SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS win the WORLD SERIES

Anyone notice? Moment of truth: I didn’t. Perhaps it’s because I live in the Deep South where Fall = Football, but I found myself ignoring the World Series over the weekend.

However, I don’t think I’m alone in this. The 2012 World Series received record low TV ratings, earning only a 7.6 (the previous low was 8.4 for the 2008 and 2010 World Series).

Now, in my defense, the Giants made a sweep of the World Series defeating the Detroit Tigers in just 4 games. Props to the Giants for getting it done, but surely I would have watched games 5-7 if they had taken place this week… Either way, in case you missed it, here is a rundown of MLB Playoffs and World Series.

THE ROAD TO THE WORLD SERIES

WILDCARD GAME (This year saw a new and dramatic addition to the MLB playoffs. The Wildcard slot was given to the victor of a single-game playoff)

  • National League Wild Card: St. Louis Cardinals defeated Atlanta Braves
  • American League Wild Card: Baltimore Orioles defeated Texas Rangers

DIVISIONAL SERIES (best of 5 games series)

NLDS (National League Divisional Series):

  • St. Louis Cardinals defeated Washington Nationals 3-2
  • San Francisco Giants defeated Cincinnati Reds 3-2

ALDS (American League Divisional Series):

  • NY Yankees defeated Baltimore Orioles 3-2
  • Detroit Tigers defeated Oakland A’s 3-2

CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES (best of 7 games series)

  • NLCS: San Francisco Giants defeated St. Louis Cardinals 4-3
  • ALCS: Detroit Tigers defeated NY Yankees 4-0

Extra point: A Sweep happens when one team wins all the games to secure a series, and the other team wins none. So, Detroit swept the Yankees in the ALCS, but then they turned around and got swept by San Francisco in the World Series.
